The freeway needs to be widened and the project is currently underway heading from South to North. It always mad me laugh watching them throw so much money at the 5/805 merge when the real problem was the loss of about 4 Northbound lanes at Via de la Valle. They are finally working on the portion between Via de la Valle and Lomas Santa Fe. Evenutally they will reach Oceanside.
With that said there will always be a couple trouble spots. I-5 snakes through Encinitas rather than running in a straight line which causes brake pumping and back ups. Also just North of Cannon Road the 5 veers West creating blinding sun in the eyes of Northbound PM rush hour communters. I’m sure there are more but those are 2 of my pet peeves.

Gridlock is no fun.

August 2, 2007 at 12:52 PM #69605Alex_angelParticipantIts just getting worst. I was heading south from OC on a Saturday and counted 9 lanes at one point. 3 car pool and 6 lanes and we were at a dead stop at noon. No matter how many lanes they build it will be a mess. On some days it is bumper to bumper from del mar straight to the OC. Widening it will only allow more cars to be stuck in traffic. SANDAG will always be behing.
The whole merge fix was to help southbound traffic. It was a plan drawn up before northbound was ever a problem.
Look at the 56. They had all the time and space to make it three lanes, instead they built 2 and now at black mountain and carmel valley it is at a dead stop, yet in between traffic flows. heading east for some reason the carmel valley part is backed up yet freed up after and now it looks like they are widening it to 3 lanes but it still will bottleneck to two. I think they do this on purpose to ensure that they will always have work.

August 2, 2007 at 1:00 PM #69607SanDiegoDaveParticipantThey should widen the 56 while they’re at it.
Actually, it should have been built 4-lanes on each side right from the beginning.

Do you seriously believe that “The whole merge fix was to help southbound traffic. It was a plan drawn up before northbound was ever a problem.”Cmon, the problem has always been Northhbound. Think about it for a second. Take one southbound freeway and split it into 2, no problem there. Now take two Northbound freeways and merge them into 1. Now thats a problem!
Actually building 56 was a miracle! I remember them trying to get it done in the early 90’s and all the battles over where and how wide. Bbe glad its there at all!

Getting to and from the coast really isnt a problem if you live within 2 or 3 miles of the coast in North County. Driving on the freeway is the problem and always will be. There is only one coastal freeway and for that matter one inland freeway (15).If you want to live in a metropolitan area traffic is part of the deal. Personally, I dont think the traffic is unbearable around here. Have you ever tried to get around NY, Boston, LA, Chicago, San Fran, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami,Baltimore or DC?
I thought you worked from home and/or traveled most of the time. If I were you I’d find the community I really wanted to live in and wouldnt worry about the traffic. If you cant put up with it find a nice quiet small town instead.

August 2, 2007 at 1:43 PM #69635mixxalotParticipantActually I do work from home most times.
So for me traffic is not really an issue. Except when I drive to the dentist in Carlsbad area from Point Loma. But I will probably find a dentist closer to home in Point Loma to save on it next year. As far as community goes, I love Point Loma area but real estate is even more expensive than Del Mar except for Rancho Santa Fe. I may buy in Oroville because I can get a nice place for 300k versus 1 million (San Diego) and still have a nice big lake nearby to use for water sports.
True its not San Diego but much more affordable, people are a lot friendlier in Oroville and less traffic and very small town.
