What is a karen?

WHAT DOES KAREN MEAN?
Karen is a mocking slang term for an entitled, obnoxious, middle-aged white woman. Especially as featured in memes, Karen is generally stereotyped as having a blonde bob haircut, asking to speak to retail and restaurant managers to voice complaints or make demands, and being a nagging, often divorced mother from Generation X.

Just go onto nextdoor in an affluent area, lol.
Plenty of examples. I don' think it's a generational thing. It's more of an "bored annoying stay at home mom that meddles all the time in everyone else's affairs" sort of thing. i got a couple of classic examples collected over time.

Here's a couple different types of Karens

Karen #1: The Pissed off I Need to Vent Neighbor Karen:
Summary: Karen was pissed off that one of her neighbors at the cul de sac had a party and was loud, but rather than be like most adults and talk the neighbor(s), she decides to rant about it on Nextdoor to get the empathy vote.

"I need to write this letter to you because, over the weekend, the constant 7-hour loud noise of the families at the end of Cul de sac on Corte de Marin was unacceptable.

I am a child therapist and advocate for children and truly believe in the magic of play and fun. At the same time, children need to learn respect for their fellow humans.
To have six plus kids barreling down the road and all literally screaming is simply not fair to anyone. The parks and beaches are now open, and it is a workweek.

Please please allow us to work in peace.
We are a community, and everyone matters.

Thank you"

Karens #2: The Parnoid Karens: Summary Suspicious looking man that drove by XXX at time YYY that didn't look like they belonged there. This gets written about all the time by Karens.

"At about 5:40PM this evening, my husband was driving into our Cul de sac (Ruette De Ville) and noticed a running car pulled over on the side of the road and a person in the car was shining a flashlight into a dark window of one of the homes. The dash cam picture didn’t get the plates or car very well but may be a dark colored Toyota Camry. Has anyone else seen this? Please be aware."

Keren #3: Bad drivers all abound Karens... These Karens get annoyed by people speeding and terrorizing the san diego roads..

"What can we do about speeding, reckless and distracted driving in Carmel Valley? Just today I was driving down Del Mar Heights Rd. and a white BMW, license plate (actually plate number posted) came by me at 90+ mph. This isn't the first time this has happened - everyday I see it on Carmel Valley Rd., El Camino Real, the 56 and of course the freeway. At 7 am the other morning when I was walking my dog, within 5 minutes I saw 2 cars run a red light, 1 person distracted on their phone, and 2 people roll through a stop sign. Rarely do I see these drivers get pulled over by law enforcement.
School will be starting soon and there will be more young drivers, cyclists and pedestrians out on the road. Which means more opportunity for crashes, injuries and deaths.
We must be able to do something to stop these dangerous drivers in our neighborhood however I'm not sure what the answer is. I'd love to hear your ideas. I think it is getting worse not better and I fear for my life every time I get on the road. I am going to ask the Carmel Valley Planning board to put this on their agenda and I hope you will attend the meeting with your thoughts."

Is this your kid’s car? I was driving west on Del Mar Heights today around 1:15pm. This car passed me around 60 MPH and then proceeded to weave through traffic at a high speed. The car was FULL of kids who were laughing and having a good time as the driver “shook” them like a roller coaster: left, right, left, right. Slowed down, speed up. Made lane changes across 3 lanes. Ran yellow, almost red, lights. Tires were screeching loudly as they turned left into the Highlands shopping center. It was soooo dangerous. As a parent with a teen, I would want to know if this was my kid driving like this. I hope the parents see this and can have a talk with this teen before they injure someone (or themselves).

Karen #4: The Coronavirus Enforcer Karens. These are the ones that go around and complain about everyone violating social distancing

Really! Is this social distancing?
Hello everyone
I understand this is a difficult time for everyone. However I am disappointed seeing some of our teenagers hanging out at ocean air rec center playing basketball!
I would ask you to talk to your kids and let them know why it is important to stay home and that it will not only put them but your whole family at risk!
Thank you so much for your help and understanding

Social Distancing Reminders
Many children in our neighborhood are being very good about social distancing - thank you! However, several children need more reminders - particularly those on scooters and bikes (where the distance should be even greater- 15 ft.), and even more so for those riding on sidewalks. A few days ago I saw a young biker pass a runner too closely. The runner asked the boy to stay away. In response the boy circled back a few times, again too close to the runner, to taunt her. Please remember to remind your children and keep our neighborhood safe by adhering to the social distancing guidelines (6-15 feet).

Karens #5: The Nosy Karens: Summary: whenever there is a large police or fire presence in the neighborhood, they have to know what's going on.

From the sounds of it, they are listening to the police and fire dispatcher 24/7/365 days a week because the moment there is a siren, there is a nextdoor post!

What’s going on major sirens like I’ve never heard so many and a helicopter. Del Mar Heights.
Anyone know what’s going on right now? Major helicopters and sirens anyone know what’s happening out there?

Karens #6: I'm better than you, move your POS Camry parked in front of my house Karen.

I got to dig this one up. It was laughable.
But in summary, it was about a Karen complaining about how a suspicious looking Camry was parked in front of her house, and she was mad that on her street of "C-executives" that anyone would park a jalopy like a toyota camry on their street, let alone in front of her house. Other Karens then chimed in that perhaps the "lowly" camry belonged to a housekeeper, lol.

Karens #7: The racist Karens

Unfortunately, I don't have any examples from Carmel Valley, but in other areas that I was a member to (Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo) and as friends that copied me from further north county, there were some pretty funny ones, that basically if the person didn't look white, the person looked suspicious.

Nextdoor is pretty bad. The stuff I read on there - and it's not just the females I might add - is really obnoxious nosey Joe and Jane type of stuff.

Yelp is fun to read too. Some of the crap that people complain about from various businesses is just amazing to read. Makes me glad I don't have to deal with the general public at my job.

i recall reading a yelp review of a restaurant we were contemplating going to and laughing so hard I was in tears at this woman's disappointment in her evening. it was difficult to believe she was serious. but i think she was

I went with my kid to Legoland a few years ago, and both of us remember this lady cut in front of us at the food line to complain about the pepperoni pizza she ordered.

She went on a tirade that the personal pepperoni pizza only had 4 pepperonis not 5 or more and demanded a full refund. The manager gave her a full refund, and then she sat down and finished the pizza.

I feel sorry for the american retail stores. What a pain in the ass american consumers are.

Karen #9. Manner Police

Etiquette while walking....
This morning I was walking West up (north side)the hill Ocean Air Dr. as I have many times. People (including myself) are always very polite & conscientious about moving to the shoulder in the street or trail if there is one, which I appreciate. However today as I approached a section with no trail I saw a group approaching so I got ready to move to the street. As I got closer I saw 3 groups of women walking together, each with a dog and some with a few children walking side by side spreading all the way into the street. None of them made any attempt to move to single file so I was forced out into the middle of the street. I really can’t believe the selfishness and rudeness. Not sure what else I could have done.

Karen #9: The anal retentive Karen

This form of Karen gets pissed off when someone uses their trashcans and feels a need to vent on nextdoor to vocalize her grievances to an audience.

Using my trash/recycling bins The Grooves
It is not legal to dump trash in your neighbor’s trash cans. I believe there is a fine.

It is really frustrating, remembering I have more to toss out after we put trash cans out for pick up. I open up recycling bin , and someone has dumped their week’s worth of fast food trash in there. Fast food is trash not recycling!

This has happened many times, I never catch them because they wait until late to do it.

It’s not that big of a deal if I have room, you ask, and you put in the correct bin. Also don’t overflow my bins, again.
It’s my service, so I’d like to use my bins, even it’s last minute.

Yes, for sure.

But at least her apology (who can know if it was genuine) was an actual apology as opposed to the "I'm sorry if anyone was offended by what I said" bullshit that seems to pass for an apology nowadays.

“I want to apologize directly to Mr. Juanillo. There are not enough words to describe how truly sorry I am for being disrespectful to him last Tuesday when I made the decision to question him about what he was doing in front of his home,”
...
“I should have minded my own business. The last 48 hours has taught me that my actions were those of someone who is not aware of the damage caused by being ignorant and naive to racial inequalities,” she continued.
...
“When I watch the video I am shocked and sad that I behaved the way I did. It was disrespectful to Mr. Juanillo and I am deeply sorry for that. I did not realize at the time that my actions were racist and have learned a painful lesson,”
...
“I am taking a hard look at the meaning behind white privilege and am committed to growing from this experience,”
...
“I would love to have coffee with Mr. Juanillo in our neighborhood so I can apologize in person and share a dialogue where I can continue to learn and grow and be a better person,” she said.

That is a solid apology. When people say, "I'm sorry if anyone was offended" or "I"m sorry if I offended anyone," that should not even be called an apology, because it's not.

Entirely possible.

My post was a bit of a threadjack. This "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" that you hear so much nowadays is ridiculous. Not so much that people apologize that way as that they get away with it. They are seen as having apologized when they have taken no blame or responsibility.

To me, an apology is only a little bit about the recipient of the apology. It's more about the giver of the apology taking responsibility, for him to say, "I was an asshole, and I'm sorry, and I'll try to do better." Saying, "I'm sorry you're a pussy for being offended" doesn't do that.

Maybe the person wasn't offended at all. My response wouldn't be to get offended. My response would be to form (or change) my opinion of the other person. I would think, "you're an ignorant racist." If the other person gives what I think is a genuine apology, and seems to understand that their behavior was wrong, I'd consider changing my opinion of them again. And any apology that sounds more like "you're a pussy" than it sounds like "I did something bad" is not a genuine apology. The one Karen gave at least has the possibility of being genuine.

I am sure her reaction would have been much different if the message were “Jesus is Lord”.

The stencil was very nicely done. Nice art. Normally it would be done with spray paint.

In other news, “y ll tired yet?” on the Lincoln memorial was a nice piece of art. Very apropos. I think it should remain.

Nothing is worse than a Karen who has no money.
So I had short a meeting with a Karen today. She’s an owner of a unit in an association where I am a board member. Her AC went out and she wanted a referral. Two weeks ago, I referred an AC who never scheduled a visit because he’s super busy.

She all upset because nobody she calls is showing up. Tough luck. When people are busy, they get to you when they get to you, unless you’re nice and willing to pay a premium. Bitching don’t do it.
