OT-AZTEC BASKETBALL

I realize I post this topic every year and it get very little interest, but I feel it's my civic duty to expand the horizons of my piggington bretheren.

If you have not been to an SDSU basketball game you are missing the best sporting event in San Diego. It's more fun than a Charger or Padre game, they do not serve alcohol and even though I'm a lush, I still love it. Been to about 1/3 of the games this year and comparing to all of the sporting events I have attended, it is clearly the best.

Don't tell me about the East coast, it's rated in top 5 of fan bases and fan experiences in the country. Watch a top ten East coast team on TV and the fans look like they are on sedatives compared to an SDSU game. Right now they are ranked #16 in the county and will likely go higher becuse that ranking was before the New Mexico win. They should not be winning either, half of last years team are on the Spurs right now, this should have been a rebuilding year and most of their recruits/transfers are not eligible till next year ( next year will be even better). GO see it, even if you don't understand the rules, its amazing!!

They are doing great this year and I am glad to hear that you are not hanging out in some sleazy bar, but going to basketball games instead. I will look for you in the crowds when I watch them on the 11:00 news. It does not seem like you were able to get the message across to the Piggs. I think they are football fans.

Yep. I'm a college hoops fan from way back. I have always felt that college basketball is the best live sporting environment in the US. Nothing compares to the energy. At a college hoops game, the student fan section is the key to the environment and the SDSU student fans are great. I have only been to 1 game this year and it was great fun.

Still hoping Beckham buys San Diego a Major League Soccer team, though. Until that happens, SDSU hoops is the best game in town.

New mexico lobos basketball.

fans are berserk.

It was almost a little scary.

College basketball is pretty intense

The kids at SDSU love any reason to party (not that most college kids dont). The tough thing about SDSU basketball is the lack of real rivalries and other quality programs close by. Back east you have rivalries tha thave been going on for years among cross town and cross state programs in the Big East, ACC and a few other smaller leagues. we just dont get that here. As to why the crowds are more sedate back east? Students make up a much smaller portion of the crowd as the programs have HUGE Alumni season ticket holder bases that SDSU does not. Its great to see what SDSU has done and I hope they keep it up. Gotta get my son down there for a game soon.

Go Aztecs!

Submitted by ctr70 on January 24, 2012 - 9:08am.

Temeculaguy is right on. Aztecs hoop is THE BEST entertainment in town hands down. The games are exciting and the atmosphere is absolutely electric! The team is a huge surprise this year now being #13, it was supposed to be a re-building year. It is THE BEST venue to watch college hoops on the west coast right now period...surpassing UCLA, USC, CAL, Stanford, and Washington.

Next year they have the whole backcourt back and they are bringing 4 new high profile transfers and recruits. They will be off the hook next year.

I would not say east coast hoops is sedate by any stretch of the imagination. Have you ever seen the student section at a Duke home game???? The sun still rises and sets east of the Rockies for college hoops...but I love the Aztecs.

From what I've heard, The Pit is every bit as crazy as the east-coast fans if not the absolute loudest in the country.

I went to a final 4 several years ago between AZ, Duke, MD, and MI St. The Maryland fans did themselves proud. And, after losing to Duke in the first game, they were just as boisterous cheering against Duke in the Duke / Arizona.

I'll probably watch the Aztecs vs. Wyoming road game tonight at a local sports bar if any PIGGS want to join.

Darn ctr, I saw this post too late, I was in SD earlier and as it turns out, I don't get the MTN up here so I had to listen on the radio.

Now they are ranked #12, with another victory tonight, they beat UNM in the pit already so the one game looming is at UNLV. They will be in top 10 by then but UNLV is good. Our fans travel in droves to vegas thus neutralizing their home court advantage, it's often called Viejas East and we've beat them 9 out 10, but this is the best UNLV team in decades.

Glad to see some piggington support on this. And for those of you thinking you just need to get around to going, they are sold out with some nosebleeds and single seats at best to be found, you have to buy them before the season starts or pay the aftermarket premium. It's 20% students, behind the basket, the rest is alumni, I feel like I'm at a reunion when I go and I graduated over 20 years ago. Don't be intimidated, it is exactly like sdrealtor remembers the east coast, with the exception of the weather.

Sounds like I gotta get to a game. Time to call Timmy. He can get tix to anything

I realize hip hop isn't really the favored music of this demographic, but this is actually pretty good, even the ESPN writers feel it's the best out there.

While it took me four or five listens to decode all of the words (acute middle aged white guy listening to hip hop syndrome) the lyrics are very witty and well thought out if you follow the game, the team and the players. Lots of basketball lingo, nicknames and references to thing specific about this team. I'm here to help you get over your syndrome if you also have one.

Thread Bump-Aztecs just broke the school record, recording a 21-0 record, last undefeated team in D-1 the country. Predicted to be a #1 seed in March from ESPN and CBS sports.

This is SD chance to win something in a revenue sport for the first time in the most tortured sports city in history.

Go see them, best entertainment in SD.

Now I would be remiss if I didn't mention Kobe's death. I bought my daughter tickets to this Fridays Laker game for a Christmas present. She is a Lakers fan because I raised her. She went to all the Kawhi Leopnard games with me at SDSU so it is in her blood. I sprung for near front row lakers seats when the Portland game on Superbowl weekend was a bargain at $450 a seat four months ago. Now it is the first game since Kobe's death and ticket prices gives her a resale value of 5k a seat. She called today to apologize and get permission to sell them, to add to her down payment on a house fund. Not only did I consent, I almost cried, so proud of my little girl, more so than when she graduated college at the top of her class. Watch it on TV and take the 10k was what she said and who says young people today are stupid, I beg to differ. So proud! The next generation will have Piggingtons.

Submitted by gzz on January 28, 2020 - 1:34pm.

TG, congrats on the ticket flip!

Beware of scams though.

Submitted by temeculaguy on January 30, 2020 - 1:18am.

thanks but no scam worries, bought them from lakers official site, ticketmaster and she is selling through same. We figured anyone dropping that king of coin would only deal direct through the official site.

SDSU won again tonight vs New Mexico at the pit, who had a 5 game home streak going. They didn't just win, they destroyed them, led 17-0 at the start had them doubled at the half and were up by 30 before pulling the starters. Gary Parish of CBS sports thinks they can win out and win the NCAA title. Here's the rub, I will be in Italy and Spain during the final four. Shame on me for not factoring in SDSU's best season when I made travel plans six months ago. I am going to be half a world away when my once in a lifetime event occurs and I won't be there to witness it. But I'll take it, I'll just stay up all night and watch on my phone!

That is great TG! Love hearing stories like this.

People have been saying the next generation is terrible since Aristotle's time. It's never been true.

Our kids chose basketball as their sport this year and I have to say, it is fun to watch kids play! Never a dull moment and I can actually see their playing improve week by week. There are very few sports where the improvement is evident on a weekly basis. It brings a smile to my face as I watch it.

Soccer, baseball, football, karate, I've watched the kids learn them all. None of them really all that fun to watch from the sidelines (to me) but basketball, that's a whole nuther animal. Maybe it is because I get to sit so close to the action, I don't know. But I find myself getting much more involved with the game. And they are super enthused about it...I'm hoping they stick with this one next year.

And yeah, I "watch" them learn. I would be a terrible teacher. I can't play sports to save my soul. Not proud of that, but it's a fact. No use denying it.

Yeah love watching my kids play basketball- basketball has so many different ways for players to help their team. Middle school is fun but when you get to the high school level things get very serious very fast. Hope your kids get tall- bigs get babied and are allowed to make the same mistake over and over while the guards get pulled and yelled at for the slightest thing. My son and daughter are both guards so I may be just a bit biased : )

Submitted by temeculaguy on February 6, 2020 - 1:09am.

Both of you are correct, it's just fun to watch and great for the kids. God help you if they go out for track or cheer. Track always involves meets far away that last 12 hours and since one of my kids was was a sprinter, it is 10 seconds at 8 am, 10 seconds at noon and 10 seconds at 4pm for the various relays and individuals while you are two hours from home and stuck in the stands for 4 hours, it's like bad layovers at the airport. Don't get me started on cheer, that's 4 years and thousands of dollars that never translates into a scholarship to watch the same routines over and over with no score. But we love them and support them no matter what, I just hope yours stick with basketball, so much better for the viewer. If any of your boys or girls make it college hoops send me a message and I'll go watch with you. I'll pay my own way and even fly to games with you, it is the best entertainment out there. Mine didn't make it to that level but I'll support any kids of piggingtons who do. College hoops is just the best and SDSU might be a 1 seed this year. Here's the irony, I'm going to Europe at the end of March, I might be over there during the sweet 16 and elite 8, I've already got the info on a data plan so I can watch but I cannot attend and it's killing me.

P.S. same offer applies to NCAA golf, other sports are negotiable. I do think this small fraternity should support each other and i know a few other piggs who would relish the opportunity for road games just for the comraderie.

Submitted by outtamojo on February 7, 2020 - 9:14am.

My kids say track is the most fun, especially the meets cause the in between events time is just hanging with their friends. Basketball and other team sports can have a lot of undeserved favoritism and hidden agendas.

Submitted by temeculaguy on February 12, 2020 - 12:54am.

As far as track goes, Sure the kids love it, but the parents are in hell. In other news, the Aztecs pulverized the Lobos tonight. Four games from being undefeated in the regular season and already the MW conference title winners. San Diegans take notice, this is already the best team we've ever had in any sport. Enjoy it, support it, we aren't likely to see this again in any other sport. We are going to be a freaking one seed! The sucky part is that I'm the only one who cares and I'm going to be in Italy, France or Spain during the final four and elite 8, I'm going to have to be awake at 4 am to watch it on my phone. unless I can find a bar in Europe that opens that early and doesn't broadcast just soccer. I'm not optimistic. I've been learning how to say ESPN in multiple languages. It's wonderful and horrible at the same time, I've got to plan my vacations better.

I don't watch sports as much as some guys, but I like this run they're having. I went to one of their local games when they had a similar run years ago. I was surprised how steep the seats are.

I used to go to the Gulls games in the early 90's. They were good. One guy didn't wear a helmet. I haven't been to a game since they came back.

I'll watch golf sometimes on the weekends. Always fun to see if a local is gonna win. Or Tiger. And golf looks awesome on these new tv's.
