Just a notice for people to be aware of. I am now getting SPAMMED by this group because someone I know decided to see who in their address book likes the same books that they do. Goodreads.com then harvested this person’s ‘yahoo.com’ email contact list and proceeded to SPAM every entry in their Contacts, even if they had de-selected the name.
In order to get them to stop, Goodreads wants you to enter in your email address in a list of emails to not sent to. I went looking for it.. couldn’t find where to enter (though there is a link in a grey’ed out area of the SPAM they sent me.) Besides, well behaved operations ‘opt-in’, while Goodreads.com wants you to ‘opt-out’. Placing your email address on their list as an email address to not send to, only confirms your email address to their system as valid.
I have resorted to setting up a filter in yahoo.com to separate this Junk Email. I will also be bringing this up with the IT department in the company I do contract work for (kind of stupid of them to send junk Email to me – they could loose ability to send to a Class B IP address space.)
Yahoo filter: locate email, single click on it in Inbox, go to Actions->Filter Emails Like This..
Select an folder or create a new folder (ie: JunkEmail) and have it route the matching Email to this folder.
PS: I am fairly certain that one of the individuals involved in Goodreads.com will create a login here to dispute my statements here and implement spin on the subject(they seem moderately aggressive in scanning other sites for comments about Goodreads.com – particularly this type of comment.). Unfortunately, my personal experience indicates that they do SPAM (send unsolicited and repeating Emails). The concept of Goodreads.com is interesting and has value, but their community behavior ruins it.
