A home in San Diego that runs 800k only costs 150-200k in South Carolina!!!!
Have you been there? Does your family fit well with the community?
For the job, $30K is a lot, housing is different, but the rest isn’t.
Lastly, if you wanted to leave you $110K IT job in for another in SD, you can, how many choices do you have where the BMW plant is at?
February 15, 2007 at 9:32 PM #45555AnonymousGuestCongratulations, mixxalot!
A former navy shipmate/apartment mate (we shared an apartment at Crown Point in the late ’80s) of mine lives in Columbia (he’s a professor at U. of South Carolina), is very happy, and does not miss San Diego, at all.
The South will do better than California in the upcoming recession/depression. Generally, things are not out of whack there (though pockets of the South are).
I’d rent, wherever I moved, and bank the saved bucks. I say that because there is the real possibility that this is going to be a protracted, painful downturn, worldwide. Even solid companies like BMW will be tested. Do good work, live frugally, and put your savings into gold, and you’ll be in a great position to buy lots of neat things — like a great house and an M3 — at discounted prices when things hit bottom.
Again, congratulations, mixxalot.
February 15, 2007 at 9:46 PM #45557AnonymousGuestA close family member of mine lived in Columbia 3 years and loved it. Another friend and her husband moved to Greenville, SC from Long Beach 2 years ago and haven’t looked back since. Nice weather, except very humid and hot in the summer, and they all said that the way of life was very laid back. Buy yourself a banjo and start strumming dueling banjos from Deliverance!
February 15, 2007 at 9:46 PM #45558sdrealtorParticipantMake sure that BMW comes with a Rebel Flag in the back window. SC is the Real Deep South. If you have any ethnicity you might not like what you find there.

the economics look pretty good at south carolina. it actually has an economy like san diego (although not as big). the housing market still has some upside to it, so you can get some decent appreciation for probably the next few years.
if you do move there, do a comparison and see how much money you can save and invest for san diego vs. columbia.
i have a 4 plex in columbia. it cost $232k and cash flows $300/mo. if the money works out, you should consider buying a 4 plex and live in one and rent out the other three. if you don’t mind the extra job, haha. but if i were you, that’s what i would do. the 4 plex will give you a little extra cash and will lower your taxes so it will feel like you are making $100k anyways.
congrats
February 15, 2007 at 9:55 PM #45560AnonymousGuestColumbia is 46% black, 2% Asian and 3% Hispanic, so don’t panic if you are ‘ethnic’ as they say. One thing I would do is remove your CA plates as quickly as possible:)
February 15, 2007 at 10:04 PM #45563CardiffBaseballParticipantI think people forget how black the south is relative to other areas. I remember staying in Durham for a couple of years, and I worked out in Raleigh, and these areas are pretty well integrated. In fact I kind of felt like Durham was a bit too much, and had I decided to move my family down from Ohio, was thinking more like Cary or Morrisville (also much closer to work).
February 15, 2007 at 11:43 PM #45567sdrealtorParticipantRaleigh Durham is not So Carolina. Sure there are lots of blacks there but life is pretty socially segregated on a daily basis. You pretty much have the Christian White majority (at least economically and politically) and the poor Black minority living very different and separate lifestyles. Anyone else is outsider.
One of my very good friends lives in that neck of the woods.
February 15, 2007 at 11:47 PM #45568PerryChaseParticipantSince I am single its easy and the thing is, dating sucks for single men unless you are loaded with millions of dollars and good looking.
Is the dating scene any better in South Carolina? I wonder if the Southern Belles are as sweet as they say.

Maybe if this guy could get a nice home (McMansion) in SD for about 500K he would not be tempted to leave maybe ???
Just my two cents.
February 16, 2007 at 8:09 AM #45575mixxalotParticipantGuys,
I am out of work and San Diego is VERY expensive right now. I have noticed that the job market is better here though than in South Carolina. However, in Raleigh north of Spartanburg where the BMW manufacturing plant is, there are lots of tech jobs. As for dating, I think that its easier in the south but I could be wrong.
I’ve found the friendliest people however to be from Minnesota, Indiana, Portland and Utah but thats been my experience. Now if I could get a real home for under 500k then I would stay in San Diego. Maybe I should just wait and see? Moving sucks either way.
February 16, 2007 at 8:38 AM #45578PDParticipantI lived in the south for a couple of years and I found the southern bells to have a very thin layer of sweet covering a big, sour core. Maybe it was just the particular area where I lived.
Minnesota does have the nicest people. In the interest of full disclosure, however, I grew up there. 🙂
February 16, 2007 at 9:06 AM #45580ibjamesParticipantNicest people, coldest winters 🙁
February 16, 2007 at 9:32 AM #45584CardiffBaseballParticipantmixx I thought I remembered you from the IT consultants board landing a gig, what happened?
I just can’t imagine RDU being terribly different from Columbia. I suppose it’s possible. I do agree that RDU is probably more cosmopolitan.
FWIW I didn’t like the Raleigh area enough to leave Ohio so I actually commuted for 2 years, traveling down to a room I rented once or twice a month. The drive down 77 through West Virgina, Virginia, and NC is quite scenic, and it was 9 hours I just didn’t mind driving. People would ask why I don’t move down here and I’d say Raleigh is very Clay Aiken, Northeast Ohio, is more Joe Walsh. That was my provincial side kicking in.
