bathroom contractor advice wanted

We have plans for a bathroom remodel and a contractor that we like. But his bid came in considerably higher than we expected. This is a remodel with no changes to exterior walls, but some relocating of interior walls, and new plumbing that will require jackhammering the slab.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a contractor who would do a good job, with good subs? We want someone who will provide an itemized bid quite quickly, then stick to it. We have detailed plans done by a designer, and we will be good clients.

What is the market like for residential remodeling these days? Is there still a recession? Or are the good contractors all busy?

Thanks for all replies!
