Some punk in a silver E90 330 was like tailgating me all the way bobbing in an out…Dude couldn’t drive like crap…Anyway, that’s the only thing I don’t like about this brand. The range of of drivers are from enthusiasts to outright idiotic.

I’ve lived in 4 states. CA I’ve lived in 4 states. CA drivers are definitely the most aggressive. But the drivers on the Schuylkill expressway between the turnpike and center city Philly break that rule. (sdrealtor may be able to confirm this.)
There are pros and cons to CA style aggressive driving.
Idiots, obviously, are the downside.
On the plus side, people drive fast so you can get from A to B quicker. When I lived in WA state it drove me nuts that everyone drove at 55 on the freeway.

I agree that CA drivers for I agree that CA drivers for the most part drive fast which is nice when you are in a hurry. What I don’t like is how slow some drivers feel they can drive in the fast lane/passing lane. In Tennessee where I grew up, people will move over if you are traveling faster than they are. In CA, drivers will drive slower to piss you off. The mindset is that if you don’t like how fast I’m driving, then it’s up to you to figure out away around me. For example, you will have a car with 10 cars jam packed behind them and they won’t even consider that they are holding up traffic. They don’t care and have a since of arrogance about it. I also think that road rage is directly proportional to these type of drivers who are in peoples way. My two cents.

Ditto. In fact, many states (and most countries) make this a law. Cars occupying the left hand lane must merge to the right when overtaken, or they can be ticketed for impeding the flow of traffic.
California even has a version of this, though I’ve never actually seen a Highway Patrol officer enforcing it – theoretically though, anyone driving in the fast lane at a lower rate than normal traffic flow could be ticketed (and “normal traffic flow” can be greater than the posted speed limit – the statute explicitly states “notwithstanding prima facie speed limits”).

I experience this almost daily. The only road coming out of my development slopes downward and has only one lane. I always get stuck behind some joker driving at 35-40 MPH at most. Of course, once the road widens to two lanes, the same joker suddenly starts driving at 45 MPH or higher. Why didn’t he drive at 45 MPH all along? To piss off the drivers behind him, obviously.

I agree Emily. I used the qualifiers “at most” and “or higher” to convey upper and lower limits. On average, the difference between my desired speed and the one I’m forced to take is about 10 MPH… it’s a big deal if I’m running late for a meeting. But I don’t get pissed off, really. I wrote that pissing others off appears to be the jokers’ motivation, to agree with Lifeisgood’s assessment.

Large SUVs and pickup trucks Large SUVs and pickup trucks are the worst. BMW drivers are second worst. Third worst are the motorcycles but I feel sorry for them because I know they will eat the road sooner or later.

I got my ticket on the 805S I got my ticket on the 805S rushing to an appoinment on Feb 29th. I had gotten on at MM Blvd and was coming down the hill past Lj Village Drive. he got me at peak speed which was about 90. When he pulled me over I said, “I bet you can get people all day coming down that hill. he said “Yup!”. I said “well its Leap Day which isnt a real day, so this didnt really happen….lets just forget about it…OK?”. He laughed and said “You’re funny, do you have any other questions?”. I said “Can I pay for this next Leap Day?”. He burst out laughing, walked away and returned with a ticket for 80. Said he gave me a break for the jokes. he also said he doesnt bother stopping anyone unless they are going over 80.

I haven’t noticed an increase I haven’t noticed an increase in aggressive driving, but I *have* noticed an increase in inattentive driving.
Going in this morning (South on I-15), the fast lane was backed up over Lake Hodges. I got into the #2 lane and made better progress.
When I got to the front car that was backing up traffic in lane #1, it was a green Honda Accord with a 20something female with long black hair. TEXTING!!
That is what infuriates me. You really shouldn’t text but if you chose do break that law, do it in the slow lane!
I’m still pissed.

I got you beat. When I was going 56W around 4pm a few days ago, there was a person in in the fast lane that couldn’t stay in the lane.. I peered over, and guess what the person was doing why driving???? Reading a book… I kid you not….The person had pinned the book on the steering wheel, and holding it with two hands while trying to hold the steering wheel too.. And the person had their head down reading and occassionally looked up…

Speed, high or low is not Speed, high or low is not what kills. What kills is going faster than what is reasonable given the current conditions. Driving at 85 MPH maybe reasonably safe or murderous depending on visibility, congestion, weather, etc.

The woman this morning was doing under 65 MPH in the fast lane while texting.
As far as what is too slow in the fast lane, that most certainly is. And it’s very rude.
As long as the person in the fast lane is overtaking the car in the #2 lane at some reasonable clip (over a minute is not reasonable), then they have every right to be in the fast lane.
Once you’re done passing, get out of lane #1. That’s what I do. Saves me from tickets too…I haven’t had one in well over 20 years.

I can certainly see that viewpoint and I do hustle out of the way if someone comes up on me quick while I’m in the fast lane, but generally speaking I try not to get upset if someone in front of me is going slower than I’d like but still doing a reasonable job of passing in the #1 lane.

It’s getting increasingly hard to drive fast in Germany. I was there few weeks ago and the roads were congested almost all the time. But in theory you are right, the first lane is supposed to be a passing lane and you are not suppose to just sit there reading your book.

Having driven in Germany a lot, let me second this. Not only will you have the guy fly up behind you, he will sit less than a car length away from your bumper (scary when you are going 100+) and flash his brights at you until you move. My husband, who lived in Germany several years, does this to people here all the time… mostly to no avail.
Despite the serious speed in Europe generally (and the Autobahn specifically), there are less accidents. My only theory behind this is that stopping on the freeways in Europe, for whatever reason (breakdowns, accidents, etc), carry hefty fines. As a result, less people do stupid things like run out of gas, and there are less rubbernecking-type accidents.
Oh, and to address the general topic – as a BMW driver myself, we are absolutely the worse drivers!

Having driven in Germany a lot, let me second this. Well one thing I think that is the problem… I don’t think U.S. roads (specifically CA roads) are really engineered for higher speeds. Plus, it’s much harder to get a license in Europe.

It depends on which road. the 99 is quite new, smooth, and straight. So are the 405 and 5 in Orange. SD’s freeway aren’t so bad either. BTW, 120 isn’t that fast. Now, if we’re talking 140+, then road condition might be more important, but 100-140 can easily be handled by our current freeway.

I drive faster than the speed limit most of the time, but when it is pouring or foggy, common sense tells me to slow down.

I just got back from a week I just got back from a week at the river; great place to relax: people seem less aggressive, drivers are much less aggressive in general vs southern California.
As I was driving back, I was really relaxed until I got to Barstow, where traffic really picks up and so does the a-hole factor (and not just because I was back).

If you think people in CA are If you think people in CA are aggressive drivers, go drive in TX where HUGE trucks will cut you off VERY close going 100….and you’re going about 85-90 in a 65. TX takes the cake on aggression compared to SD, and I think people speed so much because its such a large state and the odds of you getting pulled over are far less likely. However people here seem to be worse drivers – in terms of not knowing how to drive or sitting in the fast lane going 65 or less. I am probably an a-hole but if someone sits in the left lane and will not move for several minutes, I will go around them and cut them off.
Some of the worst drivers I experience are people in really large SUVs (Suburban’s, Escalades) and minivans…maybe its the screaming kids, but its more likely its because they have a phone GLUED to their ear or texting. I am amazed how many people are on their phones still. The other really bad drivers are people in a Prius. I see them making unsafe lane changes, unable to stay in their lanes, or driving super slow in the fast lane. But I agree that BMW drivers – well the young kids in them are pretty bad drivers.

I’ve lived in several parts I’ve lived in several parts of the US and I would have to say that So Cal drivers are second worst only after Massachusetts drivers. SoCal drivers are faster, but Massachusetts drivers are far more agressive. Within SoCal, the Inland Empire, I think, has the fastest, most agressive, and reckless drivers.
Overall, the pace of everything seems to be faster in SoCal. Plus, here in SD, we are in a college town and that puts a lot of 18-22 year olds on the roads here. Now, in Temecula, I think it is all the long-distance driving that makes people get in a mindset of driving their lifted Dodge Ram trucks at 90 – 100mph on the freeway going from one place to another.
I too am annoyed when people drive slow in the fast lane – that is THE worst. I just don’t know what the hell they are thinking staying over their for miles and miles whilst everyone is swerving around them. When I pull up alongside them while passsing, I’ve noticed they usually look constipated.

The other thing that bothers The other thing that bothers me is when drivers slow down on hills. To me this is one big reason that traffic jams start in the first place(the slinky effect). If everyone would just maintain the speed that they are going then there would be less jams.

well, maybe I’m just a magnet well, maybe I’m just a magnet of trouble. But this morning going 56E again in my x5, saw a grey e92 335is coupe and and looks like the same silver e90 330, but this time they were racing each other, bobbing in and out of traffic. WTF?
I don’t have a problems going fast when the roads are open. I do have a problem when some idiot tailgates and darts left and right when there’s traffic and no room to move…
I kinda miss the good old recession days with harder financing, I didn’t see as many idiots driving these things. Now it seems like they’re out in full force again. 🙂

I’ve lived in 4 states. CA drivers are definitely the most aggressive. But the drivers on the Schuylkill expressway between the turnpike and center city Philly break that rule. (sdrealtor may be able to confirm this.)
There are pros and cons to CA style aggressive driving.
Idiots, obviously, are the downside.
On the plus side, people drive fast so you can get from A to B quicker. When I lived in WA state it drove me nuts that everyone drove at 55 on the freeway.

I agree that CA drivers for the most part drive fast which is nice when you are in a hurry. What I don’t like is how slow some drivers feel they can drive in the fast lane/passing lane. In Tennessee where I grew up, people will move over if you are traveling faster than they are. In CA, drivers will drive slower to piss you off. The mindset is that if you don’t like how fast I’m driving, then it’s up to you to figure out away around me. For example, you will have a car with 10 cars jam packed behind them and they won’t even consider that they are holding up traffic. They don’t care and have a since of arrogance about it. I also think that road rage is directly proportional to these type of drivers who are in peoples way. My two cents.

Ditto. In fact, many states (and most countries) make this a law. Cars occupying the left hand lane must merge to the right when overtaken, or they can be ticketed for impeding the flow of traffic.
California even has a version of this, though I’ve never actually seen a Highway Patrol officer enforcing it – theoretically though, anyone driving in the fast lane at a lower rate than normal traffic flow could be ticketed (and “normal traffic flow” can be greater than the posted speed limit – the statute explicitly states “notwithstanding prima facie speed limits”).

I agree Emily. I used the qualifiers “at most” and “or higher” to convey upper and lower limits. On average, the difference between my desired speed and the one I’m forced to take is about 10 MPH… it’s a big deal if I’m running late for a meeting. But I don’t get pissed off, really. I wrote that pissing others off appears to be the jokers’ motivation, to agree with Lifeisgood’s assessment.

Large SUVs and pickup trucks
Large SUVs and pickup trucks are the worst. BMW drivers are second worst. Third worst are the motorcycles but I feel sorry for them because I know they will eat the road sooner or later.

I got my ticket on the 805S rushing to an appoinment on Feb 29th. I had gotten on at MM Blvd and was coming down the hill past Lj Village Drive. he got me at peak speed which was about 90. When he pulled me over I said, “I bet you can get people all day coming down that hill. he said “Yup!”. I said “well its Leap Day which isnt a real day, so this didnt really happen….lets just forget about it…OK?”. He laughed and said “You’re funny, do you have any other questions?”. I said “Can I pay for this next Leap Day?”. He burst out laughing, walked away and returned with a ticket for 80. Said he gave me a break for the jokes. he also said he doesnt bother stopping anyone unless they are going over 80.

I haven’t noticed an increase in aggressive driving, but I *have* noticed an increase in inattentive driving.
Going in this morning (South on I-15), the fast lane was backed up over Lake Hodges. I got into the #2 lane and made better progress.
When I got to the front car that was backing up traffic in lane #1, it was a green Honda Accord with a 20something female with long black hair. TEXTING!!
That is what infuriates me. You really shouldn’t text but if you chose do break that law, do it in the slow lane!
I’m still pissed.

I peered over, and guess what the person was doing why driving???? Reading a book… I kid you not….The person had pinned the book on the steering wheel, and holding it with two hands while trying to hold the steering wheel too.. And the person had their head down reading and occassionally looked up…

Speed, high or low is not what kills. What kills is going faster than what is reasonable given the current conditions. Driving at 85 MPH maybe reasonably safe or murderous depending on visibility, congestion, weather, etc.

The woman this morning was doing under 65 MPH in the fast lane while texting.
As far as what is too slow in the fast lane, that most certainly is. And it’s very rude.
As long as the person in the fast lane is overtaking the car in the #2 lane at some reasonable clip (over a minute is not reasonable), then they have every right to be in the fast lane.
Once you’re done passing, get out of lane #1. That’s what I do. Saves me from tickets too…I haven’t had one in well over 20 years.

I can certainly see that viewpoint and I do hustle out of the way if someone comes up on me quick while I’m in the fast lane, but generally speaking I try not to get upset if someone in front of me is going slower than I’d like but still doing a reasonable job of passing in the #1 lane.

It’s getting increasingly hard to drive fast in Germany. I was there few weeks ago and the roads were congested almost all the time. But in theory you are right, the first lane is supposed to be a passing lane and you are not suppose to just sit there reading your book.

Having driven in Germany a lot, let me second this. Not only will you have the guy fly up behind you, he will sit less than a car length away from your bumper (scary when you are going 100+) and flash his brights at you until you move. My husband, who lived in Germany several years, does this to people here all the time… mostly to no avail.
Despite the serious speed in Europe generally (and the Autobahn specifically), there are less accidents. My only theory behind this is that stopping on the freeways in Europe, for whatever reason (breakdowns, accidents, etc), carry hefty fines. As a result, less people do stupid things like run out of gas, and there are less rubbernecking-type accidents.
Oh, and to address the general topic – as a BMW driver myself, we are absolutely the worse drivers!

Well one thing I think that is the problem… I don’t think U.S. roads (specifically CA roads) are really engineered for higher speeds. Plus, it’s much harder to get a license in Europe.

It depends on which road. the 99 is quite new, smooth, and straight. So are the 405 and 5 in Orange. SD’s freeway aren’t so bad either. BTW, 120 isn’t that fast. Now, if we’re talking 140+, then road condition might be more important, but 100-140 can easily be handled by our current freeway.

I’d argue those types of accidents have little to do with people on european freeways going faster generally, and more to do with driving too fast for conditions. I drive faster than the speed limit most of the time, but when it is pouring or foggy, common sense tells me to slow down.

I just got back from a week
I just got back from a week at the river; great place to relax: people seem less aggressive, drivers are much less aggressive in general vs southern California.
As I was driving back, I was really relaxed until I got to Barstow, where traffic really picks up and so does the a-hole factor (and not just because I was back).

If you think people in CA are aggressive drivers, go drive in TX where HUGE trucks will cut you off VERY close going 100….and you’re going about 85-90 in a 65. TX takes the cake on aggression compared to SD, and I think people speed so much because its such a large state and the odds of you getting pulled over are far less likely. However people here seem to be worse drivers – in terms of not knowing how to drive or sitting in the fast lane going 65 or less. I am probably an a-hole but if someone sits in the left lane and will not move for several minutes, I will go around them and cut them off.
Some of the worst drivers I experience are people in really large SUVs (Suburban’s, Escalades) and minivans…maybe its the screaming kids, but its more likely its because they have a phone GLUED to their ear or texting. I am amazed how many people are on their phones still. The other really bad drivers are people in a Prius. I see them making unsafe lane changes, unable to stay in their lanes, or driving super slow in the fast lane. But I agree that BMW drivers – well the young kids in them are pretty bad drivers.

I’ve lived in several parts
I’ve lived in several parts of the US and I would have to say that So Cal drivers are second worst only after Massachusetts drivers. SoCal drivers are faster, but Massachusetts drivers are far more agressive. Within SoCal, the Inland Empire, I think, has the fastest, most agressive, and reckless drivers.
Overall, the pace of everything seems to be faster in SoCal. Plus, here in SD, we are in a college town and that puts a lot of 18-22 year olds on the roads here. Now, in Temecula, I think it is all the long-distance driving that makes people get in a mindset of driving their lifted Dodge Ram trucks at 90 – 100mph on the freeway going from one place to another.
I too am annoyed when people drive slow in the fast lane – that is THE worst. I just don’t know what the hell they are thinking staying over their for miles and miles whilst everyone is swerving around them. When I pull up alongside them while passsing, I’ve noticed they usually look constipated.

College town? SD is large metro area, I don’t know why many think of it as a sleepy beach town, or a college town. I’d think that the military population alone outnumbers the college-age population. Then there’s the biotech, start-up pharma, and the high tech sectors… College town? That would be Chico, CA or Madison, WI.

The other thing that bothers
The other thing that bothers me is when drivers slow down on hills. To me this is one big reason that traffic jams start in the first place(the slinky effect). If everyone would just maintain the speed that they are going then there would be less jams.

well, maybe I’m just a magnet of trouble. But this morning going 56E again in my x5, saw a grey e92 335is coupe and and looks like the same silver e90 330, but this time they were racing each other, bobbing in and out of traffic. WTF?
I don’t have a problems going fast when the roads are open. I do have a problem when some idiot tailgates and darts left and right when there’s traffic and no room to move…
I kinda miss the good old recession days with harder financing, I didn’t see as many idiots driving these things. Now it seems like they’re out in full force again. 🙂
